Prof Alan Barber

Professor Barber is a neurologist specialising in stroke. He graduated from the Otago Medical School and completed his neurology training in Auckland, New Zealand. He received a PhD from the University of Melbourne, Australia. His thesis examined the role of diffusion- and perfusion-weighted MRI in identifying patients with the potential to respond to acute stroke therapies. He returned to New Zealand in 2001 and established the stroke unit at Auckland City Hospital, which has a very active thrombolysis and endovascular thrombectomy treatment program. His research interests include the use of advanced neurophysiology and imaging techniques, and acute therapy in stroke. He is the Neurological Foundation of New Zealand Professor of Clinical Neurology at the University of Auckland. He is the immediate past president of the Australia and New Zealand Association of Neurologists.
